July 2017 -Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On September 29, 2017, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 60.033 personal bankruptcies and 62,913 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2017.  Bankruptcies were down 5.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 3.4% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2016.

New Brunswick – there were 2,675 personal bankruptcies and 1,754 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2017.  Bankruptcies were down 5.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 20.5% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2016.

Nova Scotia – there were 4,055 personal bankruptcies and 1,891 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2017.  Bankruptcies were up 2.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 15.3% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2016.

Prince Edward Island – there were 450 personal bankruptcies and 277 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2017.  Bankruptcies were down 8.2% and consumer proposal filings were down 8.6% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2016.
