March 2017 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On May 31, 2017, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 62,333 personal bankruptcies and 63,153 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31. Bankruptcies were down 2.0% and consumer proposal filings were up 6.7% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2016.

New Brunswick – there were 2,825 personal bankruptcies and 1,644 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were down 0.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.7% as compared to the 12-months ended March, 2016.

Nova Scotia – there were 4,166 personal bankruptcies and 1,871 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were up 10.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 21.1% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2016.

Prince Edward Island – there were 465 personal bankruptcies and 310 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were down 11.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 1.6% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2016.
