April 2016 Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On June 30, 2016, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.
Canada – there were 63,715 personal bankruptcies and 59,652 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2016, for average total filings of approximately 10,280 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 0.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 8.2% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2015.
New Brunswick – there were 2,866 personal bankruptcies and 1,511 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2016, for average total filings of approximately 365 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 2.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.5% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2015.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,760 personal bankruptcies and 1,578 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2016, for average total filings of approximately 445 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 0.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 4.2% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2015.
Prince Edward Island – there were 526 personal bankruptcies and 289 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2016, for average total filings of approximately 68 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 3.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 18.4% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2015.
