December 2018 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On February 8 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposals filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 55,091 personal bankruptcies and 70,175 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.0% and consumer proposal filings were up 9.3% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2017. There were 3,852 personal bankruptcies and 5,087 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of December 2018.
New Brunswick – there were 2,262 personal bankruptcies and 2,218 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 7.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 16.5% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2017. There were 178 personal bankruptcies and 159 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of December 2018.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,483 personal bankruptcies and 2,112 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 8.5% and consumer proposal filings were up 10.2% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2017. There were 240 personal bankruptcies and 146 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of December 2018.
Prince Edward Island – there were 426 personal bankruptcies and 305 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were up 10.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 6.6% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2017. There were 34 personal bankruptcies and 28 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of December 2018.
