July 2018 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On September 28, 2018, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 55,955 personal bankruptcies and 67,215 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 6.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 6.8% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2017. There were 4,437 personal bankruptcies and 5,392 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of July 2018.
New Brunswick – there were 2,277 personal bankruptcies and 2,104 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 14.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 20% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2017. There were 214 personal bankruptcies and 183 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of July 2018.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,539 personal bankruptcies and 2,054 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 12.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 8.6% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2017. There were 291 personal bankruptcies and 155 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of July 2018.
Prince Edward Island – there were 426 personal bankruptcies and 296 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2018. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 6.9% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2017. There were 36 personal bankruptcies and 23 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of July 2018.
