January 31, 2016, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcyreleased its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.
Canada – there were 66,108 personal bankruptcies and 58,827 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 10,436 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 1.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 9.7% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2014.
New Brunswick– there were 2,914 personal bankruptcies and 1,530 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 370 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 3.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 19.7% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2014.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,730 personal bankruptcies and 1,597 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 444 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 0.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.3% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2014.
Prince Edward Island – there were 522 personal bankruptcies and 296 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 68 per month. Personal bankruptcies remained unchanged and consumer proposal filings were up 35.8% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2014.
