November 2018 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On January 4 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 58,035 personal bankruptcies and 70,475 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 4.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 8.4% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2017.  There were 4,887 personal bankruptcies and 6,774 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of November 2018.

New Brunswick – there were 2,307 personal bankruptcies and 2,234 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 9.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 19.9% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2017.  There were 216 personal bankruptcies and 220 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of November 2018.

Nova Scotia – there were 3,536 personal bankruptcies and 2,094 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 8.4% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.7% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2017.  There were 299 personal bankruptcies and 191 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of November 2018.

Prince Edward Island – there were 416 personal bankruptcies and 299 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were up 3.0% and consumer proposal filings were up 5.7% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2017.  There were 35 personal bankruptcies and 28 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of November 2018.
