December 2015 Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On February 29, 2016, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 63,406 personal bankruptcies and 58,203 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 10,134 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were down 2.2% and proposal filings were up 9.4% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2014.

New Brunswick – there were 2,814 personal bankruptcies and 1,517 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 361 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 6.9% and proposal filings were up 17.9% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2014.

Nova Scotia – there were 3,648 personal bankruptcies and 1,584 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 436 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 2.1% and proposal filings were up 5.5% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2014.

Prince Edward Island – there were 519 personal bankruptcies and 287 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 67 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 3.4% and proposal filings were up 31.1% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2014.
