On November 30, 2014, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.
Canada – there were 65,598 personal bankruptcies and 52,108 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2014, for average total filings of approximately 9,808 per month. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 6.7% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2013.
New Brunswick – there were 2,945 personal bankruptcies and 1,270 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2014, for average total filings of approximately 351 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 5.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 23.1% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2013.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,603 personal bankruptcies and 1,457 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2014, for average total filings of approximately 422 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 12.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.8% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2013.
Prince Edward Island – there were 509 personal bankruptcies and 213 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2014, for average total filings of approximately 60 per month. Personal bankruptcies were up 9.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 35.7% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2013.
