December 2014 Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On February 27, 2015, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcyand consumer proposalfilings for Canadian consumer debtors.

Canada – there were 64,839 personal bankruptcies and 53,211 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2014 for average total filings of approximately 9,838 per month.  Bankruptcies were down 6.3% and proposal filings were up 7.6% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2013.

New Brunswick – there were 3,021 personal bankruptcies and 1,287 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2014 for average total filings of approximately 359 per month.  Bankruptcies were up 6.1% and proposal filings were up 16.1% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2013.

Nova Scotia – there were 3,726 personal bankruptcies and 1,501 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2014 for average total filings of approximately 436 per month.  Bankruptcies were up 13.1% and proposal filings were up 10% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2013.

Prince Edward Island – there were 502 personal bankruptcies and 219 proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2014 for average total filings of approximately 60 per month.  Bankruptcies were up 14.1% and proposal filings were up 23.7% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2013.
